The Stress Statistics

That Say it All

You may wonder why I have included a page about stress on a website about turning around midlife crisis.

Well, it will come as no surprise to you to know that stress and midlife crisis go hand in hand.

Whatever the root of midlife crisis, work, money, people... stress is a worldwide phenomenon, and a common human experience of which we have plenty.

The Roper Starch World-wide survey of 30,000 people between the ages of 13 and 65 in 30 countries showed:

1.Women who work full-time and have children under the age of 13 report the greatest stress worldwide.

2.Nearly one in four mothers who work full-time and have children under 13 feel stress almost every day.

3.Globally, 23% of women executives and professionals, and 19% of their male peers, say they feel "super-stressed".

If you are a working midlife mum there are few surprises here.

As a coach, both online and through my ebook "How To Stop Your Midlife Crisis...Now.. I work with people to identify their own UNIQUE personal stressors.

Thats the first step. The second step is creating a plan to remove them!

I think the following are truly SHOCKING Statistics from the United States Of America(Source: American Psychological Association Survey 2008)But they give us terrific insight into the midlife stresses people experience worldwide.

Nearly half of Americans report that their stress level has increased over the past year, with as many as 30 percent rating their average stress levels as extreme (8, 9 or 10 on a 10-point scale where 10 means “a great deal of stress”.

Nearly 50% of Americans say that they are increasingly stressed about their ability to provide for their family’s basic needs.

81% of Americans say money is their number one source of stress.

80% of Americans say the current state of the economy is a source of stress.

67% of Americans say that their work is a source of stress

67% experience stress as a result of health issues in a family member

64% of Americans list family responsibilities as a source of stress

62% of Americans indicate relationships as a stressor

61% of Americans expericnce stress as a result of concerns with their own health

56% say job stability is now a source of stress

Nearly half of all Americans (48%) say they would be somewhat or very uncomfortable asking others for help managing their stress.

Nearly six in 10 (58 percent) say they would be uncomfortable seeking professional advice to help manage stress or stress-related problems.

33% of women report an average stress level of 8, 9 or 10 on a 10-point scale (versus 27percent of men).

6 leading causes of death have been linked to Stress – Cancer, Heart Disease,Lung Ailments,Suicide,Accidents and Cirrhosis of the Liver.

Medical researchers estimate that stress is now the underlying cause of over 80% of all illnesses

Approximatley 25% of all prescriptions written in the US every year are for stress controlling drugs such as tranquillizers,anti-depressants and anti- anxiety drugs.

$300 billion, or 7,500 per employee, is spent annually in the U.S. on stress-related compensation claims, reduced productivity, absenteeism, health insurance costs, direct medical expenses and employee turnover.

Enough said - stress is wreaking havoc in our world and the only answer I can see is for each of us to identify the roots of our own personal stresses, think anew and taking responsibility for dealing with them one by one.
